Prevention of environmental pollution due to releases of hazardous substances in environmental risk plants by increasing the resilience of supply chains

Project name: Prevention of environmental pollution due to releases of hazardous substances in environmental risk plants by increasing the resilience of supply chains

Project client: ARIS Public Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Research and Innovation

Time frame: 1 October 2024 – 30 September 2025

Project coordinator: UM Faculty of Logistics

Participating organizations: Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy

Brief summary of the project:

NaTech (Natural Hazard Triggering Technological Disasters) is a term that describes natural disasters that trigger technological disasters. It is an interaction between natural and technological risks, where a natural disaster (for example, a flood, earthquake, hurricane or landslide) causes damage or malfunction of a technological system (such as an industrial plant, infrastructure, storage of hazardous substances), which can lead to the release of hazardous substances, fires , explosions and other forms of technological accidents. NaTech can be closely linked to climate change, as it causes more frequent and intense extreme weather conditions, which increases the risk of technological disasters. Increasing resistance to climate change is the key to reducing the risks of NaTech accidents. There are approximately 60 facilities in Slovenia that are classified as SEVESO facilities and for which it is of particular importance that they manage risks well and act preventively due to the handling of hazardous materials. Guidelines and measures to improve the safety of the environment and society are therefore of key importance. The project application directly addresses the real challenges of climate change and provides potential solutions, and aims to carry out a comprehensive review of NaTech events in Slovenia and abroad, to identify risk factors and their threat in Slovenia, to provide guidelines and measures to improve safety, guidelines for reducing environmental risks and increasing the resilience of critical facilities, and last but not least, to provide guidelines and measures to increase the resilience of supply chains and examine the impact of climate change on NaTech events and resilience of supply in the future.
