Course Description

Subject, Stochastic processes in logistics, focuses on the processes that change with time and space according to the laws of probability. A real-world process is deterministic, if under the equivalent experimental conditions, the output value remains the same, and is stochastic, if the presence of random variable described by a probability density function leads to the random changes in the output value. Firstly, the course introduces theoretical foundations of probability theory, characteristics of random variables, distributions and statistical indicators. Secondly, the Markov processes with discrete/continuous states in discrete/continuous time are presented as fundamental stochastic processes. Furthermore, the insight into the Poisson processes and their applications of simple queuing systems is given. During the course, students are faced with methods of mathematical analysis, which importance is reflected with the analytical examination of concrete problem. Therefore students are capable of understanding the issues and are able to seek an adequate way to address the problem.

Depending on the chosen topic and method of work, students are acquainted with and learn about the research work:

– performance of analyses and calculations,
– academic writing and reporting.

Students of the Project Management course extend their basic knowledge in the field of project management from the first stage of study and thereby gain skills to design and manage complex projects or project programs in the field of logistics systems. Subject Principles of modelling dynamics in logistics is intent to gain in-depth knowledge of modelling, simulation and analysis methods of dynamic processes in logistics. Students are familiarized with the basics of dynamics of continuous and discrete systems and they are capable of analytical and numerical modelling of those systems. They also become familiar with computer based tools for modelling and simulation of dynamic processes in logistics. Students will upgrade their knowledge gained from lectures with tutorials exercises, where with the help of analytical and numerical models will solve complex dynamic process of professional problems in logistics.

Course Description

Lectures: Introduction – importance of warehouse systems in the transport-warehouse logistics function. Material flow – warehouse as a queuing system (“fluid flow model”). Warehouse operations – receiving, process customer orders, order-picking, checking, packing, put away. Warehouse management systems – receiving and shipping, stock locator system, features, market supply. Storage and handling equipment – storage equipment, transporters, sorting equipment etc. Types of forklifts – due to their working principles, drive motors, carrying capacity, bearing strength. Transportation handcarts – classical, autonomous, folding, assembling – special handcarts, inductive guided etc. Transport storage unit – pallets, boxes etc. Designing and planning of packing. Technological procedures of packing: vakuum packing, sterile packing, packing in a modificated atmosphere, active packing. Protection of goods and safety manipulating – at interior transport, at transport on long distance, safety managing with transport devices. Storage strategies. Commissionaire – types, equipment, zones. Design of warehouse systems – storage rack systems, construction of the warehouse, shape optimisation.

Seminar: Seminar (project) work supplement lectures with practical solutions of engineering problems concerning warehouse operations.

It should be taken into account that cultural characteristics, rather than economic can make a difference in the performance of the organization, mainly due to cultural diversity or conflict of values.

In this course you will learn about the basic concept of communication, communication process and how to communicate in contact with other cultures. You will learn about the communication process within the organization and the strategic aspects of the design of communication processes in an organization, means and methods of communication and transmission of messages, communication with business partners, negotiations, presentations, some cultural differences in international business relations, lobbying, business etiquette, culture and ethics in communication and the peculiarities of each civilization and cultural entities.

Course Description

Subject, Principles of modelling in logistics, refers to the graph theory and its applications in logistics. Graph theory belongs to the field of discrete mathematics, which is significant in applying ideas to logistics problems, especially from the field of operations research. Firstly, the course introduces basic concepts, definitions and examples of applications. Follows the Euler and Hamilton graphs presentation, while the term tree and its respective optimisation is introduced. Applications of graph theory are related to various problems; from the shortest path problem, maximum flow problem, travelling salesman problem, location problem and others. The student is subjected to the optimisation problem within a logistics network, where the initiative and creative thinking of individuals is reflected. Regarding analytical study of the problem, a systematic solving approach, and constructive analysis of the obtained results, the student is capable to find an efficient solution to the concrete logistics problem.

A student who has already joined  scientific research work in one of the laboratories in the framework of the course “Introduction into scientific research work” under the mentorship of higher-education teachers, assistant teachers and researchers in laboratories continues with his/her work on a chosen research project.
Depending on the chosen topic and method of work, students learn about and deepen their knowledge of research work. Students apply the theoretical knowledge they gained in the 1st and 2nd year of study to a concrete logistical problem.
